Burn baby!

Burning for you

There's outrage in northern Minnesota after firefighters allowed a man's mobile home to burn.

Carl Berg had failed to pay the 25-dollar annual fee required for fire protection for homes outside International Falls city limits.Berg says he couldn't afford the fee or fire insurance. He says he lost everything in last month's fire.

We had orders not to stop the fire because the guy didn't pay. Maybe they should ask the local mafia to come in for fire protection. At least you know what you're getting.

While I agree with you that not letting people's homes burn is a good thing, however...

Fire departments are paid for by taxes, and he lives outside the taxed area. Meaning, he's not paying for the trucks, the staff, the training, etc. So,the city charges the people outside the area to be part of the service. He chose not to have it.

So, if they put out his house, they have to put out everyones house, and no one will pay, because why should they. Now the people who do pay the taxes get worse service in favor of those who don't.

Letting it burn is harsh, but it's the lesser of two evils.

True, but in that case we can no longer look at them as the heroes trudging through the fires, holding a young child in one arm with an axe in the other.

They've now become paid beaurocrats who care more abou their pensions then their community.

They can't have it both ways.
